Our Earl Grey Black has a seriously heady aroma, and so connects us with Ada Lovelace’s story and personality. We love her quote “That brain of mine is something more than merely mortal; as time will show.” She is widely recognized as the world’s first computer programmer.

Earl Grey is not a type of tea, but a flavored tea. Specifically a black tea flavored with oil from the rind of a bergamot fruit, which is a citrus. It was created in 1830, which lands smack in the middle of Ada Lovelace’s personal timeline.

Earl Grey traditionally was a blend of Chinese and Indian teas scented with oil from the citrus bergamot fruit. One of the stories about the origins of Earl Grey is that a British diplomat on a Chinese mission received this recipe as a gift of gratitude for saving a life of a Mandarin. On return, the diplomat presented the tea to the then Prime Minister, Earl Grey. It was the Prime Minister of England (1830-1834) Earl Grey who made this tea fashionable.

Only high grown teas from the top 3 tea growing regions of Sri Lanka – Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva are used here. These three high-grown districts produce flavorful teas that have classic ‘Ceylon’ tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavor notes, touches of mild astringency, bright coppery color and, most importantly – perfect for use as the base tea of our flavored teas.

Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya have a major quality peak during Jan/Feb, whereas Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya have their peak in July/Aug. This ‘dual peak period’ allows us to procure the best for our flavored tea blends several times during the year, ensuring top quality and freshness.

Flavoring oils (and not crystals) are used to give the tea drinker an olfactory holiday before indulging in a liquid tea treat. High quality tea tastes good and natural flavors specified do not mask the natural taste of the high grown tea. (Compared to the use of overpowering artificial flavors, which can be used to mask lower quality tea). Natural flavors do not leave an aftertaste giving the tea a clean and true character. They tend to be somewhat ‘soft ‘ and the flavors slightly muted, but for many this is a refreshing change and one of the desired attributes of our naturally flavored teas.

Ada Lovelace, the mathematician who wrote the earliest known algorithm.

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, commonly known as Ada Lovelace, was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron.

🎨🔬She was literally the daughter of art and science.

👾 Although her father, the poet Lord Byron, may be the more well-known of the pair, it was Ada Lovelace’s mother, Annabella Milbanke, who acted as the role model for her daughter’s iconoclastic and pioneering contributions to the field of computer science.

When Ada was twelve, she began studying what she called flyology – the mechanics of flight.

🔭 Lady Byron encouraged Ada’s interest and aptitude in science and mathematics and shared her own love of astronomy and geometry, raising a young woman who came to be called “the Enchantress of Numbers” by her colleague and friend, British inventor Charles Babbage.

Babbage created the Analytical Engine, the first mechanical computer and Ada saw the machine’s potential: that it could eventually go beyond number crunching to process text, images and music.

⭐️🔢 Ada, already a mathematician wrote the earliest known algorithm made to be carried out by The Analytical Engine.

Ada Lovelace became then widely recognized as the first computer programmer - the "Mother of Computer Programming".

🍵The iconic tea flavor “Earl Grey” was invented during the Countess of Lovelace’s lifetime, and its heady aroma reminds us of her highly cerebral character.

▶︎ When we decided to create a tea based upon her personality, the strong yet poetic blend of bergamot oil with black tea was ideally suited.
